Private dental services market study

We’ve launched a market study into private dental services here in the UK

We’re looking into the private dentistry market

The CMA is looking at how the private dentistry market works, how well it works for consumers, and whether it could work better.

We are focusing on the supply of private dental services – including preventative, clinically necessary and cosmetic treatments – in the United Kingdom.

Read our guide for consumers, and check our roadmap to see the main dates and milestones for this project.

As part of this work, we have prepared some helpful tips for consumers. We also asked consumers and dental professionals about their experiences of private dentistry. Our call for views has now closed - thank you to everyone who responded to us. The information you provided will help us understand how this market is working

Tips for choosing dental care

Many of us find it difficult to understand our dental care options, and choosing a dentist or deciding on treatment can feel overwhelming. Our handy tips can help. We also have a full guide to help you when choosing and paying for dental treatment.

1

Find and compare dentists

If you're looking for a dentist, search online and ask your family and friends where they go. Research can help you make the right decision for you. There’s lots to think about: Does the practice offer NHS and private treatments? What about the costs? And do the practice facilities and opening times work for you?

2

Know the costs

Private dental fees can vary, so it’s important to ask for clear pricing upfront. Knowing the cost in advance helps you avoid nasty surprises and makes it easier to plan ahead. Get a treatment plan, so you can see what you’re paying for. It’s one of the simplest ways to understand your options, compare approaches, and feel confident you’re getting good value for money.

3

Ask about other options

Your dentist should explain all the treatment options available to you – including those that may be cheaper. If you’re not sure why they are recommending a treatment, or you’re worried about the cost, ask them to talk you through the alternatives.
